The SGPA & CGPA Calculator works out your Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) from your course credits and grades, and can combine several semesters into your Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). Add each course with its credit value and grade, and it instantly shows your credit-weighted SGPA, total credits, and an estimated percentage.
It is built for Indian university and engineering students. You can choose a grade-scale preset (AICTE/CBSE, VTU, or Anna University), or switch to Custom and enter your own grade-to-point mapping. The percentage conversion is also selectable, because different universities use different formulas. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is stored.
How to calculate SGPA and CGPA
- Pick your grade scale (or choose Custom to edit the grade-to-point mapping).
- Enter each course’s credits and grade — your SGPA and percentage update instantly.
- Choose the percentage formula that matches your university (CBSE ×9.5, VTU (x−0.75)×10, ×10, or custom).
- To get your CGPA, open “Combine semesters → CGPA” and enter each semester’s SGPA and credits.
SGPA vs CGPA — what is the difference?
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is the credit-weighted average of your grade points for a single semester. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the credit-weighted average across all semesters. Both use the same idea: GPA = Σ(credits × grade points) ÷ Σ(credits). A high-credit course, or a high-credit semester, therefore counts more.
Grade scales and customisation
- AICTE / CBSE (O–F): O=10, A+=9, A=8, B+=7, B=6, C=5, P=4, F=0.
- VTU (S–F): S=10, A=9, B=8, C=7, D=6, E=5, F=0.
- Anna University (O–U): O=10, A+=9, A=8, B+=7, B=6, C=5, U=0.
- Custom: edit the grade letters and points to match any university exactly.
CGPA / SGPA to percentage
Universities convert grade points to a percentage in different ways. CBSE uses percentage = CGPA × 9.5, while VTU uses percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, and some institutions simply multiply by 10. Pick the matching formula (or set a custom multiplier) so your percentage is correct for your university.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate SGPA?
Multiply each subject’s grade points by its credits, add them all together, and divide by the total credits for that semester. This calculator does it for you as you enter each course.
How do I calculate CGPA from SGPA?
CGPA is the credit-weighted average of your semester SGPAs: multiply each semester’s SGPA by its credits, add them, and divide by the total credits. Use the “Combine semesters → CGPA” section to do this automatically.
How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
It depends on your university. CBSE uses CGPA × 9.5, VTU uses (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, and others use CGPA × 10. Select the correct formula in the calculator, or enter a custom multiplier.
What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?
SGPA is for a single semester; CGPA covers all semesters combined. This tool calculates SGPA from your courses and can roll multiple semesters up into your CGPA.
Can I use it for any university’s grading system?
Yes. Choose a preset (CBSE, VTU, or Anna University) or select Custom to define your own grade letters and points, and pick or customise the percentage formula to match your institution.
