The Tip Calculator works out the tip on any bill and, when you are dining as a group, splits the total evenly between everyone at the table. Enter the bill amount, choose a tip percentage, set how many people are sharing, and it shows the tip, the grand total, and what each person owes.

Tap a preset for the common tip rates, or type your own. Turn on “round up” to push each share to the next whole rupee so nobody has to fish out coins. Everything is worked out instantly in your browser — nothing you type is sent anywhere. If each person paid a different amount, use the Bill Split Calculator to settle up instead.

How to use the tip calculator

  1. Enter the total bill amount.
  2. Pick a tip percentage from the presets, or type a custom rate.
  3. Enter the number of people splitting the bill.
  4. Optionally turn on “round up” so each share is a whole rupee.
  5. Read the tip, grand total, and the amount each person pays.

How the bill split is calculated

The tip is worked out as a percentage of the bill, then added to it, and the grand total is divided equally between everyone. In formula form: tip = bill × tip% ÷ 100, grand total = bill + tip, and per person = grand total ÷ number of people.

Worked example: a ₹1,000 bill with a 10% tip adds ₹100, for a grand total of ₹1,100. Split between 2 people, that is ₹550 each — ₹500 towards the bill and ₹50 towards the tip.

How much should you tip?

Tipping norms vary by country and by how the service was. In India, a tip of 5%–10% is common at sit-down restaurants (and many places already add a service charge, so check the bill first). In the United States, 15%–20% is the norm for table service. The table below shows what each rate adds to a ₹2,000 bill.

Tip and total on a ₹2,000 bill, by tip percentage.

Tip %Tip amountGrand total
5%₹100₹2,100
10%₹200₹2,200
15%₹300₹2,300
18%₹360₹2,360
20%₹400₹2,400

Tips for splitting a bill fairly

  • Check whether a service charge is already on the bill before adding a tip, so you do not pay twice.
  • Decide whether to tip on the pre-tax amount or the final total — this calculator tips on the amount you enter, so enter the figure you want to tip on.
  • Use “round up” to avoid loose change; the small extra simply goes to the tip.
  • For very uneven orders, people sometimes pay for what they ordered and split only the tip — an even split is simplest when orders are similar.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate a tip?

Multiply the bill by the tip percentage and divide by 100. For a ₹1,000 bill at 10%, the tip is ₹1,000 × 10 ÷ 100 = ₹100, making the total ₹1,100.

How do you split a bill with a tip between friends?

Add the tip to the bill to get the grand total, then divide by the number of people. A ₹1,000 bill with a ₹100 tip is ₹1,100, or ₹550 each between two people.

How much should I tip at a restaurant in India?

A tip of about 5%–10% is common at sit-down restaurants in India, but many add a service charge already — check the bill before tipping so you do not pay twice. In the US, 15%–20% is standard.

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

Either is acceptable; tipping on the pre-tax amount is slightly more common. This calculator applies the tip to whatever bill figure you enter, so enter the amount you want to tip on.

What does the round-up option do?

It rounds each person’s share up to the next whole rupee so there is no loose change to settle. The small extra collected is added on top of the bill and tip, split evenly between everyone.
