The Data Storage Converter converts between digital storage units — bits, bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes, and their binary equivalents (kibibytes, mebibytes, gibibytes, tebibytes). Enter a value, choose the units, and see the result instantly with a full table.

It handles the common confusion between decimal units (1 KB = 1,000 bytes) and binary units (1 KiB = 1,024 bytes). Everything is calculated in your browser.

How to convert data storage

  1. Enter the size value.
  2. Select the unit to convert from and the unit to convert to.
  3. Read the result instantly, or press Swap to reverse.
  4. See the value in every unit in the table below.

Decimal vs binary units

Storage is measured two ways. Decimal units (KB, MB, GB) are powers of 1,000, used by drive manufacturers and networks. Binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB) are powers of 1,024, used by operating systems. This is why a “1 TB” drive shows as about 931 GiB in your computer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many MB are in a GB?

In decimal terms, 1 GB = 1,000 MB. In binary terms, 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB. Both are supported here.

Why does my hard drive show less space than advertised?

Manufacturers use decimal units (1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes) while operating systems use binary units (1 TiB = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes), so a 1 TB drive shows as about 931 GiB.

How many bits are in a byte?

There are 8 bits in one byte. This converter accounts for that when converting to and from bits.
