The 75% Attendance Rule: How Many Classes Can You Miss?

August 9, 2026 · 5 min read

Most Indian colleges and universities require a minimum of 75% attendance to sit for exams. Fall below it and you could face a fine, be detained, or be barred from the exam. So it pays to know exactly where you stand — and this guide shows how the maths works.

How attendance percentage is calculated

It is simply the number of classes you attended divided by the total classes held, times 100. For example, if you have attended 72 out of 90 classes, your attendance is 72 ÷ 90 × 100 = 80%. That is comfortably above the 75% line.

How many classes can you skip?

This is the question most students actually want answered. If you are above the requirement, you can miss some future classes and still stay at 75%. The way to work it out is to keep your attended count fixed and increase the total until the percentage would drop below the limit.

Using the same example — 72 attended out of 90 — you can afford to miss the next 6 classes. After missing 6, your total becomes 96 and 72 ÷ 96 = exactly 75%. Miss a seventh, and you drop below the line.

What if you are already below 75%?

Then the question flips: how many classes must you attend in a row to climb back up? Here you add classes to both the attended count and the total. For instance, if you have attended 60 of 90 (66.7%), you would need to attend the next 30 classes without missing any to reach 75% — because (60 + 30) ÷ (90 + 30) = 90 ÷ 120 = 75%.

A few things to keep in mind

  • Requirements vary — some courses need 80% or 85%, so check your own rules.
  • Medical or officially approved leave is sometimes counted separately or condoned.
  • It is safest to keep a small buffer above the minimum rather than cutting it fine.

Rather than doing this by hand each time, our Attendance Percentage Calculator shows your current percentage and tells you exactly how many classes you can skip, or must attend, to stay above your requirement.
